This complete skills workbook is directed at the general public, healthcare providers, and individuals and family members who have lost a loved one. One of the most overlooked aspects of grief is cooking and mealtime and even more overlooked is how often individuals are faced with finding the strength to prepare a meal or set a table for one. The workbook contains grief exercises, healthy grieving techniques, recipes on cooking-for-one, and self-assessment strategies to be utilized at various stages for coping with daily life in adjusting to a new normal after loss. Helping individuals discover a new sense of meaning, purpose, and happiness in life after loss are key objectives reflected through the culinary arts in a grief cookbook. This workbook provides help in weekly meal planning, preparing shopping lists, gauging portion size, and utilizing leftovers to create new meals with attention to personal milestones and holidays. Because leftovers can be painful reminders of missing loved ones, all recipes are designed to minimize food waste, with leftovers from previous meals being used in new recipes. Culinary Grief Therapy features grief exercises in guided recipe memoir writing, personal reflections, trigger identification, cognitive mapping, and guided meditation exercises. As part of the bereavement counseling program in AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Hospice, a need was identified by Heather Nickrand, MA, LPC, NCC in individuals who had lost loved ones and were having difficulty with adjusting to meal planning, shopping, and cooking-for-one. Individuals expressed feelings of loneliness and depression when grocery shopping and cooking for themselves alone, which led to many painful memories of the loss of their loved one. The feelings of grief lingered throughout the day and had a negative effect on subsequent meals leading to avoidance of activities, skipped meals, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. To address this need for grief counseling, Culinary Grief Therapy Cooking-for-One Series was developed. The Cooking-for-One Series provides the components of a grief support group in a culinary setting with recipes created by Laura Lerdal and David Kramer. Instructors for the Cooking for One workshops include Heather Nickrand, Laura Lerdal, and David Kramer. This form of therapy is interactive and engaging and empowers individuals to express their grief in healthy, rational, and positive ways.

This book really gets to the heart of cooking for one. It gives you so many tools to read and understand what you are going through. I was never really thrilled with cooking so when my husband died it was harder still to get in the kitchen. This book helped me think and do things differently, and now I think of all that was written in this book and it is so helpful. You will not regret getting this book.Product details

Absolutely amazing workbook!!!!
I typically do not post comments but I felt I must as someone gave this book and one star review. The book is described as a workbook and it is designed to help those who have lost someone and struggle in the area of cooking for one. This is a wonderful book and has helped many individuals work through grief.
This program is an absolutely genius idea and the book really helps to show you how to model the program! I have seen the success that the therapy has with families of all ages and the gratitude they show from this process is a real breakthrough in managing grief through our most basic need for food! Not only does it help to share with others that are also grieving but it teaches one that pleasure through memories can heal some of the pain and help to find new friends and memories at the dinner table! The recipes are excellent also! I really hope this spreads worldwide!
Nothing like what I expected. I was wanting a cooking book. Not useful at all.
